Background of the Study
Religious doctrines significantly influence cultural practices and social norms, including attitudes toward marriage systems such as polygamy. In Ekiti East Local Government Area, Ekiti State, religious teachings play a pivotal role in shaping public perceptions and acceptance of polygamous relationships. Traditional interpretations of sacred texts often provide the basis for supporting or challenging the practice, leading to divergent views within communities (Fadeke, 2023). While some adherents view polygamy as a culturally sanctioned institution, others critique its social and economic implications, particularly for women and children (Olawale, 2024). These contrasting perspectives have spurred debates among scholars, policymakers, and community leaders regarding the ethical and practical dimensions of polygamy. This study investigates the influence of religious doctrines on individual and communal attitudes, exploring how scriptural interpretations and religious leadership contribute to the ongoing discourse. The research draws on qualitative interviews, surveys, and doctrinal analyses to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between faith and marital practices, ultimately aiming to inform policy and community interventions (Babatunde, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
In Ekiti East, the influence of religious doctrines on polygamy has resulted in conflicting attitudes and social tensions. Despite its cultural legitimacy for some, polygamy raises concerns about gender inequality and family dynamics. The lack of consensus among religious leaders and community members complicates the development of policies that address these issues effectively. This study seeks to clarify how religious teachings shape these attitudes and to identify the challenges in reconciling traditional practices with contemporary social values (Fadeke, 2023; Olawale, 2024).
